Water Scarecrow – Deter foxes with jets of water
The Scarecrow Motion Sprinkler is an animal repeller that detects the movement of an animal and then shoots out a jet of water, scaring the animal off.
If you have a problem with foxes fouling on your lawn or digging up flowerbeds, then the Scarecrow Motion Sprinkler is a great way of keeping them away.
It’s battery operated via a 9 Volt battery that is conveniently included with the main unit when you buy it.
It has a pretty long battery life, obviously depending on how often it’s triggered and you can assemble it without any tools.
You will need a hosepipe for it to function, as that is what feeds the water into the unit.
Check that the ScareCrow Motion Sprinkler Animal Repeller is working
When you get the unit, check that it works. Insert the included 9V battery and turn the sensitivity dial about halfway round.
Wave your hand around in front of it and you should hear a couple of clicks.
This is the water valve opening and closing which is what causes the jet of water to shoot out when it’s connected up to the hosepipe (Please bear in mind that once the water valve opens and closes, there is then a 8 or 9 second interval period where the system resets itself before it is able to shoot out water again).
If it does all this then the unit is working correctly and you are ready to set it up in your garden.
Positioning the ScareCrow Animal Repeller
In order the deter foxes (or other animals) try and position the motion sprinkler towards the area where the fox enters the area you are protecting.
If possible, try and position it so that the fox will walk across rather than towards the ScareCrow.
Ideally, you also want enough room to be able to walk up behind the repeller so you don’t get shot with water, should you need to turn it off or adjust it.
Of course, if this is not possible, then you can always turn it off at the tap if you need to fiddle with it.
Attach the sprinkler and pointed spike to the main unit. The foot rest on the spike should be towards the bottom. Connect your hosepipe and drive the spike into the ground, pointing at the area you are protecting.
If it works out that the best position for your ScareCrow is on a patio or pathway or somewhere too hard for the pointed spike, then fill a plant pot or bucket with soil and mount it that way.
Turn on the tap and you should have yourself a working Contech Water ScareCrow Animal Repeller. Adjust the sensitivity setting as necessary.
Using the ScareCrow to repel foxes
The water scarecrow is great way of dealing with those problems of foxes digging and fouling on lawns and flower beds and is very effective.
However, as always, I recommend using it in conjunction with another fox deterrent such as the scent-based Scoot Fox Repellent or a sonic device like the FoxWatch Fox Repeller. These should be used at the point the fox enters the garden for most effectiveness.
If you have cats or dogs (or small children!), then they are going to be triggering it all the time, so this probably isn’t the right fox repellent for you.
But if you are bothered by cats coming into your garden as well as foxes, then you will find the ScareCrow Motion Sprinkler very useful.
