Fox Deterrent Wall and Fence Spikes
Anti-climb fence and wall spikes are an excellent low cost way of helping to keep foxes out of your garden.
Please note however, that although they are very useful, they should not be the ONLY method you use to repel foxes.
They should be used in conjunction with your favoured scent-based fox repellent or motion activated deterrent.
The fence spikes come in a variety of colours and should be chosen according to your own personal preference in keeping with your walls and fences.
My fences and walls are a reddish brown, so i have inconspicuous brown coloured spikes. The spikes are made of a heavy duty rigid plastic and are surprisingly durable.
They are available in a range of lengths so it is up to you how much you need depending on the size of your garden.
As they are inexpensive, it’s probably best to get a little more than you think you need, in case you install the spikes then realise that they are also needed somewhere that wasn’t initially obvious.
Use screws or superglue to attach the fence spikes
The spikes arrive in strips of three with each section being around 450mm long and 45mm wide.
If you have a thinner fence, the strips can easily be cut down to one row (15mm wide) or two rows (30mm), so they are quite flexible depending on your needs.
There are screw holes along each strip so these can be nailed, screwed or fixed with strong adhesive, depending on your preference.
Using screws is maybe marginally more secure, but a strong superglue will do the trick and probably makes the job a bit quicker.
Please note that in addition to repelling foxes, many people use fence spikes in order to stop cats and also stopping pigeons from settling on the tops of walls and fences.
So it’s worth bearing in mind that it might not just be foxes that are affected by the spikes.
Successful fox deterrent means finding where the fox gains access
An important thing that many people do not do, is to investigate where the fox gets access to your garden. A fox will normally jump over a wall or fence in the same place each time.
If you can work out where this is (footprints in the mud, scratches on fence or you’ve actually seen it), then this is the area you must target with the spikes.
Obviously try to identify any other places the fox might seek to gain access, but by placing spikes at the point where the fox normally vaults up onto the fence or wall, the fox’s routine will be severely disrupted.
Install the fence spikes, keep an eye on the results and then install them elsewhere if necessary.
Remember that a fox’s behaviour cannot be changed overnight (however much you want it to!) and it takes time, patience and adaptability to successfully deter them from your garden.
