Review: Foxwatch Fox Deterrent

The Foxwatch Fox Repellent device is a product designed specifically to keep foxes away from your garden by emitting an unpleasant sound that scares the fox, discouraging it from entering your garden. Importantly, the sound that is emitted is inaudible to humans, so there are no problems with it becoming a nuisance to you or your neighbours.

The Foxwatch  is a brown plastic unit about 6 inches long that comes with a mounting stake that enables you to place it in a lawn or a flower bed. It also has a fixed mounting section on the back so it can also be mounted on a fence or a wall. A small booklet containing operating instructions and technical specifications is also included with the device.

This is the only ultrasonic fox deterrent on the market that is manufactured in the UK and tested in foxes in urban areas in the UK. Others that you see are made in China and generally have not been specifically tested on foxes. This is hugely important and is the main reason the FoxWatch is the best ultrasonic device available.

It’s manufactured by Concept Research Ltd, a company based in Stevanage who have been making animal deterrents, for over 20 years (their CatWatch Cat Repeller has actually been endorsed by the RSPB).  They have done extensive scientific testing directly on foxes and have produced a fox repellent that is weatherproof and able to cover an area of 1350 sq ft. Concept Research also provide a 2 year manufacturers warranty for the Foxwatch, which provides peace of mind in the unlikely event that something goes wrong.

How do I use the Foxwatch Fox Repellent Device?

The Foxwatch unit can be powered by a 9 V battery or via a mains 12V adaptor. Please be aware that the unit itself does not come with either of these power supplies. The battery or the adaptor MUST be purchased separately. Once you have installed the battery or connected it to the mains, turn the switch underneath to ‘On’ and the unit will then bleep 3 or 4 times and a red LED light will flash. You can take these signs to show that the fox repellent device is on and functioning correctly.

There are two ways for the Foxwatch to be mounted. Firstly, the device comes with a pointed plastic mounting stake that clicks into the place on the bottom of the unit. This can then be stuck into a lawn of flower bed area. The outer casing of the device also allows for the Foxwatch to be mounted on a fence or a wall via a screw that slots into a keyhole on the back. These two different ways of mounting the unit gives you a bit more flexibility, depending on the layout of your garden.

For best results, the Foxwatch is most effective when placed in the area where the fox enters the garden. If the fox faces a deterrent before it has even entered the garden, it is much more likely to stay away completely, otherwise you run the risk of the fox getting some way into your garden before it triggers the motion sensor.

When placing the Foxwatch, also ensure that it is not blocked by trees, walls, fence posts or other obstructions, as this will limit the effectiveness of the motion sensor in detecting a fox’s movement.

How does the Foxwatch Fox Deterrent repel foxes?

Inbuilt into the unit is a motion detector that triggers a high pitched sound when it detects a fox trying to enter your garden. Movement is detected up to 40 feet away and the sound lasts for ten seconds. The sound will keep ringing until the fox leaves the area. As previously stated, the sound is not audible to humans. A fox’s hearing frequency ranges up to 65,000Hz, whereas a human can only hear up to around 23,000Hz. The output frequency of the Foxwatch Fox Repeller is between 40-45,000Hz.

Foxes are incredibly adaptable animals, which is why they thrive in urban areas. What this also means, however, is that they will learn to associate your garden with an unbearable and startling noise, causing them to forage and claim territory elsewhere. Do not expect to get results overnight though, as a change in a fox’s behaviour can take time, but over time you will see a reduction in visits from the fox before it stops coming into your garden altogether. The Foxwatch can therefore be seen as a successful and effective long-term solution to getting rid of foxes from your garden, rather than a quick fix that wont solve the problem for long.
